There have been significant advances in assessment processes and diagnostic criteria since the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure were first described in the medical literature (Lemoine, Harrouseau, & Borteyru, 1968; Ulleland, Wennberg, Igo, & Smith, 1970) and the terminology of fetal alcohol syndrome was first applied (Jones & Smith, 1973).
